Linear Encoders

Linear encoders are used where straight-line position information is needed – usually X, Y or Z axes

Incremental type is chosen when accurate relative position is needed, while absolute type is chosen when accurate absolute position is required on ‘switch on’ and no homing process is needed.

Today linear encoders are widely use in many growing fields such as printing, semi conductor systems, 3D printers or industrial machinery as CNC or dicing systems, all these require accurate position information, Therefore, the encoder type and technology are chosen according to the needs.

The linear magnetic encoder system consists of a read head and self-adhesive magnetic scale.
The incremental scale is magnetized with 2 or 5 mm magnetic poles and as the read head moves along the scale it detects the magnetic signature of the magnetized scale and processes these signals to the desired output and resolution.
The ‘homing’ process on incremental encoder can be done with a burned reference mark at a required position along the scale or with a mobile reference mark sticker which can be moved to desired locations.
RLS offers wide range of highly robust encoders with resolutions up to 0.24um and high accuracy of ±10um/m!
Some of these incremental encoders are miniature in size or can be offered with a special track system kit which contains aluminum extrusion and clamps to ease the installation process.

Within the readhead, an infra-red LED emits light onto the angled scale graduations where it is directed back through a transparent phase grating.
This produces sinusoidal interference fringes at the detection plane within the readhead. The optical scheme averages the contributions from many scale graduations and effectively filters out signals not matching the scale period. This ensures signal
stability even when the scale is contaminated or slightly damaged.
The reference mark (index) signal provides a repeatable up to unit of resolution ‘home’ or zero position,
The reference signal is generated with an external magnet actuator or integrated fully optic reference mark on the scale
(depends on the product chosen).

RESOLUTE’s industry-leading performance is the result of a sophisticated, reliable and innovative method of operation. Crucially, the system uses a single track non-repeating “bar code” scale format with a nominal pitch of 30 µm. With its sophisticated optical design the RESOLUTE readhead captures a near-instantaneous image of this scale which, when analysed, allows a unique position to be identified at speeds of up to 100 m/s. The system allows position to be determined with resolution as small as 1 nanometre (1 billionth of a metre) and with low noise (jitter below 10 nm RMS) and SDE (Sub-Divisional Error, the error within a scale period) of just ±40 nm. This provides encoder feedback of superior fidelity, to ensure smoother velocity control and rock-solid positional stability.
