Rotary encoders are used for angular position information and motion control of rotating elements.

Incremental type is chosen when accurate relative position is needed, while absolute type is chosen when accurate absolute position is required on ‘switch on’ when no ‘homing’ process is needed.

Rotary encoders are established for many years in deferent automation sectors.
While in the past, engineers used rotary on axis encoders Installed on the rotating shaft / element, today hollow rings are commonly used in order to wisely use the space around the rotating shaft as well as earn the hollow space to pass cables, slip ring etc.

The rotary magnetic encoder system consists of a read head and an axial or radial magnetized ring.
The incremental ring is magnetized with 2 or 5 mm magnetic poles, as the ring rotates the read head detects the magnetic signature of the magnetized ring and processes these signals to the desired output and resolution.
The ‘homing’ process with incremental ring encoder can be done with a burned reference mark on the ring.

RLS’s magnetic on axis encoder contains an integrated circuit that senses the angular position. The IC senses the angular position of a permanent magnet placed above it. The permanent magnet is diametrically polarized and of cylindrical shape.
Hall sensor technology detects the magnetic flux density distribution at the surface of the silicon. Hall sensors placed in a circular array around the center of the IC deliver a voltage representation of magnetic field distribution.
The sine and cosine voltage outputs from the sensor array vary with magnet position. The sine and cosine signals are then converted to absolute angle position with a fast flash interpolator.
This basic sensing technology can then be combined with further electronics to produce a wide range of output formats. Resolutions of up to 13 bit absolute (8192 counts per revolution incremental) are achieved with internal interpolation.

Renishaw’s unique filtering optics average the contributions from many scale periods and effectively filter out non-periodic features such as dirt. The nominally square-wave scale pattern is also filtered to leave a pure sinusoidal fringe field at the detector. Here, a multiple finger structure is employed, fine enough to produce photocurrents in the form of four symmetrically phased signals. These are combined to remove DC components and produce sine and cosine signal outputs with high spectral purity and low offset while maintaining bandwidth to beyond 500 kHz.
Fully integrated advanced dynamic signal conditioning, Auto Gain , Auto Balance and Auto Offset Controls combine to ensure ultra-low Sub- Divisional Error (SDE) of typically <±30 nm.
This evolution of filtering optics, combined with carefully-selected electronics, provide incremental signals with wide bandwidth achieving a maximum speed of 10 m/s with the lowest positional jitter (noise) of any encoder in its class. Interpolation made with fine resolutions down to 1nm!
Renishaw offers highly accurate rings with patented conical inner diameter to help installation and to prevent ‘extra eccentricity’ issues and by that to ensure extremely high angular accuracy position!
The IN-TRAC reference mark is fully-integrated in the incremental scale and is detected by a split photodetector within the readhead, reference mark output is bi-directionally repeatable to unit of resolution at all speeds.

RESOLUTE’s industry-leading performance is the result of a sophisticated, reliable and innovative method of operation. Crucially, the system uses a single track non-repeating “bar code” scale format with a nominal pitch of 30 µm. With its sophisticated optical design the RESOLUTE readhead captures a near-instantaneous image of this scale which, when analysed, allows a unique position to be identified at speeds of up to 36,000rpm.

We offer wide range of shaft / hollow shaft optical encoders.
on axis optical encoders operate in photoelectric method, a principle of light modulation by passing through a pair of scales,
Than it hits light sensitive detectors and is converted into sinusoidal signals, which are further processed by electronic circuits.
Disc scale and reticle pair modulates the light passing through them.
On the reticle, lines are located in four sectors: the sectors in the pairs are shifted by half step of lines and between pairs shift is 1/4 step of lines. Additional code sector is located on the reticle for reference signal generation. Each output signal of the encoder is formed by a pair of photodiodes and due to anti phase photodiodes connection the DC signal offset is compensated. Additional pair of photodiodes generates the reference position signal.
Four photodiodes arranged behind the disc and reticle generate two orthogonal current signals I1 and I2. Two photodiodes arranged behind the code sectors generate reference signal I0. Depending on the output signals required by the application the appropriate electronic block is built into the encoder. It translates photodiodes current to four output signal types:
11 µA sine-ware current , 1Vpp sine-wave voltage , TTL square-wave or HTL square-wave .
On Absolute encoder type, the code disc has many tracks depending on resolution and code,
The fact that the disc is coded with unique pattern makes each position a unique absolute position!
Absolute on axis encoders can be offered in Multi-turn version as well, where the encoder not only ‘knows’ the absolute position within each single turn but also ‘knows/ remember’ the position within the revolution number.
